Aim -
Concept Modelling of a Side fender and Front Bonnet.
Objective –
Our objective here is to use the images provided and make a 3-D surface model of side fender and bonnet, by overall experience and visualization.
Introduction -
Automotive Designs, almost every time, are representation and imagination of the designer which is shown on the plain sheet, but the design cannot be finalized without observing how it looks and feels in person and that is why we have an entire product design team, where a Design is made with teamwork and trial and error. Now after the final sketch has finalized, a CAE Engineer works on that Sketch. Now sometimes we do not have all the views and at that time we have to assume certain areas and certain parts how it looks and how is the vision of the designer, here comes the experience and capability of the engineer to perform that task.
And for that reason, we are performing this project, which is, just by one image and our understanding of the part we will make the whole volume. We will use the shades, the lightings and depths of the shades as well to deter how that particular area is supposed to be.
Approach -
Work Process –
We are at the stage of conceptual modelling we will be using below-mentioned tools –
We are having 2 Tasks, Fender and Bonnet,
Consider the image shown above, our first task is to make a Fender as per the image.
We will add the image in the workspace and adjust the Transparency.
Now, we will have to make decide how much are we actually have to make because the image shown above is of side view and contains some part which does not come in Fender so the area we will model is shown below,
Now that we have decided we will make the curves consider the image showing the same -
We have to also decide how much depth we want in so that we can achieve the volume as close as possible to real fender see will move these curves as shown below -
We will need to add some shape and volume to it so that when we make surfaces we have all edges to work on.
At this stage, everything is normal and does not require any high level of modelling skills, all we need is the visualization capabilities and understanding.
Now that all the curves are made, we will make the surface consider the image below, for this, we have used Square and Freeform blends at some places, we can use Square all the way but it is all based on personal preference.
As we can see we do not require G2 curvature here we just need edge to edge align surfaces so we have used G0 continuity here, rest, all other surfaces are having good reflections and curves. So we can continue further and concentrate it on the backside now.
As per above the curves shown we have actually extended the curves and the added some crown to it as we do not want flat surfaces. The main highlight of this area is the top curve which plays a major role both in Fender generation and connection between the fender and the Bonnet so we will have to imagine how it will flow so manipulate the curve accordingly some images of which is shown,
As we can see from the image the curve is not at the edge it is slightly below it which is where it needs to be.
Now from the above image, it can be easily seen that how the transition and some tilt angle is given to the curve and it is not actually flat, this is where the actual ability to think and visualization comes to play. Now after this we just need to complete the volume.
Here we have worked smart and made the curves to trim along with the generation curves rather than making the surfaces and then making curves for trimming.
Now we will make the surfaces. And to achieve the closed volume we will do the same, Extend - Intersect and Trim. Then we will apply fillets to finish the model.
A Complete model of which is shown in the image below -
As we can see the reflections are crisp the model is smooth and continuous and the edge is made where it needs to be. And we achieved a good quality surface.
Now, we will make the Bonet.
We will approach it as shown in the image below -
As this only have simple Curves no difficult ones to make. As this is a Symmetric one so we can make half of it, all we need to image is the height and the curvature at the edges that's all. Consider the following image -
Now we will make the surface making it symmetric.
As we can make all the surface at once because it is al Square and we will use square directly. and that is why we doest not require to connect the surfaces to each other. Moreover, about the continuity, we require G0 so that it is aligned. The only part where G2 Curvature is used is at the corners we use G2 Continuity because it aligns CV lines to the other curve and that is all we need.
Now our models are completed and have acceptable reflections.
Conclusion -
After finishing this project the visualization and understanding of the Automotive part is increased which helps in building the part from just one perspective view.

Hood design-Week 2
Hood - The Hood/Bonnet is an opening body panel or BiW part, which covers the front of a vehicle It covers the engine room in case of the front-engine vehicles and luggage room in rear-engine ones A hood is similar to a door Commonly used materials in Hood - These materials are selected based on the required properties…
